The year 2026 marks a monumental milestone in the world of fine whisky: the 100th anniversary of The Macallan 1926. A full century has passed since cask 263 was filled and laid down under the careful watch of Janet ‘Nettie’ Harbinson. Unbeknownst to her at the time, that single cask would be bottled in 1986 by her great-nephew, Allan Shiach, yielding just forty bottles. That historic release would eventually claim the title of the most valuable bottle of wine or spirit ever sold at auction, with the Valerio Adami edition fetching an astounding £2.18m at Sotheby’s London in 2023.
As the maturation of the 1926 vintage drew to a close in 1986, another extraordinary journey was just beginning. Laid down in a quiet corner of the Estate that very same year, The Macallan Romantica Collection has now been unveiled to celebrate this centennial legacy.
The Cask: A 1986 Vintage
The Romantica Collection is an incredibly rare release consisting of just 258 bottles, all drawn from a single sherry-seasoned European oak cask—Cask No. 9925. Resting undisturbed since 1986, this whisky represents the pinnacle of patience and craftsmanship. The name “Romantica” itself carries a dual significance; beyond its artistic roots, it is a Spanish word that serves as a subtle nod to the European oak cask sourced from Jerez de la Frontera, Spain.
A Trinity of Artists Reunited
To honor the legacy of the 1926 release, The Macallan has reunited the trinity of globally acclaimed artists originally commissioned to create its iconic labels. Sir Peter Blake, Valerio Adami, and Michael Dillon have returned to bring their singular perspectives to a collection that bridges one hundred years of history.
Only 86 bottles of each artist’s edition will be released, making each label a highly coveted piece of whisky history.
-
Sir Peter Blake – The Music Room: Blake’s intricate collage captures the deep sense of community at the heart of the distillery. His artwork imagines a celebratory crowd gathered outside the Spiritual Home, Easter Elchies House, in 1986—the pivotal year The Macallan 1926 was bottled and the Romantica Collection was distilled.
-
Valerio Adami – Romantica: The collection takes its name from Adami’s contribution. On his certificate of authenticity, Adami titled his piece “ROMANTICA,” a style of art emphasizing imagination, emotion, introspection, and the freedom of spirit. His composition—featuring a lady, the moon, and stars—is drawn from a sketch he originally made in 1986. The lady represents Janet Harbinson, connecting the custodian of the past to the artistry of the present.

Michael Dillon – The Macallan Estate: Dillon’s breathtaking landscape painting captures the natural beauty of the Easter Elchies Estate in Speyside, Scotland. His work highlights the Distillery as an almost imperceptible architectural masterpiece, sheltered beneath its iconic undulating, grass-covered roof.
Bridging One Hundred Years of History
The adoption of the name “Romantica” perfectly encapsulates the sentiment embodied in each piece of art, as well as The Macallan’s enduring commitment to its community and to nature. By bridging the distillation of 1926 with the visionary artistry of 1986 and the culmination in 2026, The Macallan Romantica Collection stands as a profound tribute to a century of exceptional whisky-making.
