To celebrate its 200th anniversary, The Macallan has launched the TIME : SPACE collection, a tribute to the distillery’s rich history and forward-thinking approach to whisky making. This limited-edition release encapsulates the essence of “time travel” through whisky, offering a unique experience that spans the brand’s storied past and promising future.
The centerpiece of the collection is the TIME : SPACE release, housed in a dual-chamber vessel that holds two exceptional whiskies. The outer chamber contains an 84-year-old whisky, the oldest ever released by The Macallan. This extraordinary spirit, matured in two 1940 casks—a first fill American oak and a second fill European oak, both seasoned with sherry in Jerez—boasts an impressive 43.6% ABV. This rare whisky embodies the distillery’s legacy and honors the craftsmanship of past generations.
Kirsteen Campbell, The Macallan’s Master Whisky Maker, expressed the significance of this release: “Reaching back to the 1940s to select this remarkable stock for our 200-year anniversary was an incredible honor. As members of the Whisky Mastery Team, we have the unique privilege of ‘time traveling,’ curating whiskies from our past while preparing casks for the enjoyment of future generations. Tasting and selecting a whisky crafted over eight decades ago is an extraordinary experience that I will always cherish.”
The central chamber of the TIME : SPACE vessel holds a whisky distilled in 2018, marking the first production year at The Macallan’s new distillery. This younger whisky symbolizes the brand’s future, showcasing its ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence. Campbell noted, “The 2018 vintage brought a lot of excitement to our sample room. It offers a glimpse into The Macallan’s future and commemorates a pivotal moment in our history—the opening of our new distillery. Through a blend of art and science, we’ve ensured that the distinct character of our whisky endures.”
Another standout in the collection is the TIME : SPACE Mastery release, which celebrates the “craft of whisky mastery” at The Macallan. This expression features a complex blend of 14 different cask types, resulting in a whisky with layered depth and character. Lead Whisky Maker Euan Kennedy shared insights into the creation process: “Drawing inspiration from past masters, we’ve explored every corner of our warehouses to capture the diverse influences of cask seasoning, oak origin, cask size, and distillery character. The result is an extraordinary whisky, with the elegance of European oak at its core.”
The TIME : SPACE Mastery whisky is a blend of European and American oak sherry-seasoned casks, American oak bourbon casks, and refill casks, all coming together in a circular vessel that symbolizes the “circle of life.”
Throughout 2024, The Macallan has celebrated its bicentennial with style, including a collaboration with Cirque du Soleil and the release of “Tales of the Macallan Volume II.”
The Macallan TIME : SPACE collection is available for purchase by invitation, while the TIME : SPACE Mastery will be available in select locations and subject to availability.
